A new, non replica production of Wicked opens in Bühne Baden, Austria, October 3, and Playbill has a first look at the fascinating new staging.
Directed by Andreas Gergen, this production has retained Stephen Schwartz's music and Winnie Holzman's plot, with German lyrics by Michael Kunze and German dialogue by Ruth Deny. Of most interest, however, is the wholly new look for the show, distinguishing it from the version currently on Broadway (fans might notice that Glinda and her bubble more resemble the 1939 Wizard of Oz film).
The show features stage design by Momme Hinrichs, costumes by Claudio Pohle, choreography by Francesc Abós, lighting design by Stephanie Affleck, sound design by Florian Carau, makeup design by Edu von Gomes, and music direction by Sebastian de Domenico. This production uses orchestrations by William David Brohn, and arrangements by Alex Lacamoire and Stephen Oremus.
This production stars Laura Panzeri as Elphaba, Vanessa Heinz as Glinda, and Timotheus Hollweg as Fiyero. Both Mark Seibert and Andreas Lichtenberger play The Wizard at various performances, with Maya Hakvoort serving as Madame Akaber, a new name applied to the role of Madame Morrible.
Beppo Binder plays Dr. Dillamond, Anna Rosa Döller plays Nessarose, and Jens Emmert plays Moq, a renamed Boq. Elphaba's Father is portrayed by Branimir Agovi, Elphaba's Mother / Schön-Schön is portrayed by Liviana Degen, the Midwife / Pfanny is portrayed by Mariella Hofbauer, and the Young Wizard / Averick is portrayed by Jan-Eike Majert. The company is supported by the orchestra, choir, dance ensemble, and young artists of the Baden Stage.
