News Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, the Musical, Opens in CT; Jefferson Mays Is Multifarious The musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, starring Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays in eight roles, opens Oct. 19 at Hartford Stage in Connecticut following previews from Oct. 12. Mays won the Best Actor Tony Award for his solo turn in I Am My Own Wife, and also appeared in Broadway's Pygmalion, The Best Man and Journey's End.

Hartford Stage artistic director Darko Tresnjak directs the musical set in the elegant Edwardian era. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder "traces the brilliant trajectory of Monty Navarro — a charmer, seducer and avenger — on his quest for recognition and family fortune," according to Hartford Stage. Expect "a delightful evening of music, merriment…and murder."

A Gentleman's Guide has book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman, music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak. Tresnjak directs.

Performances continue to Nov. 11. The cast of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder also includes Heather Ayers (Broadway's A Little Night Music and Young Frankenstein) as Evangeline Barley, Lady Eugena; Ken Barnett (Broadway's Wonderful Town and The Green Bird) as Monty; Rachel Izen (Broadway's Mary Poppins) as Miss Marietta Shingle, Tour Guide; Chilina Kennedy (Broadway's Jesus Christ Superstar) as Phoebe; Lisa O'Hare (My Fair Lady U.S. tour) as Sibella Hallward; Kendal Sparks (The MUNY's The Producers and Les Misérables) as Farmer, Magistrate, Warden; and Price Waldman (Goodspeed's Sweeney Todd) as Barber, Detective.

A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is produced in association with The Old Globe in San Diego.
