The application period is now open for the Geffen Playhouse’s second cycle of The Writers’ Room, a one-year playwriting residency to foster the development of new work.
The Los Angeles-based theatre began the program in 2018 under the leadership of the Geffen Artistic Director Matt Shakman, made possible with support by Patricia Kiernan Applegate.

During the residency, Writers’ Room playwrights will gather monthly for group feedback, as well as guidance from Manager of New Play Development Rachel Wiegardt-Egel. Writers will also receive dramaturgical support from the theatre’s artistic staff, tickets to all Gil Cates Theater shows at Geffen Playhouse for the season in which their residency takes place, and the chance to develop their work with a director and actors leading to a reading that may be open to the public.
The inaugural class of writers consisted of Angelica Chéri (Prophet's Cycle Trilogy, Gun & Powder), Dipika Guha (Yoga Play, The Art of Gaman), Chelsea Marcantel (Airness, Everything is Wonderful), Brian Otaño (You Across From Me), Liza Powel O'Brien (First Natives, In Frame), and Matt Schatz (The Burdens, Dunkfest '88).
