The Educational Theatre Association has partnered with London's National Theatre to bring more than 70 films of their productions to EdTA member educators for use in the classroom across the U.S. The program will allow EdTA members to show their students productions from the National's stages for free.
Members will be able to watch the titles via the Drama Online platform, in partnership with Bloomsbury Publishing. The catalogue features much of the titles the company has broadcast to movie theatre internationally as part of their National Theatre Live series, along with archive tapings only ever offered via their streaming platform National Theatre At Home. Amongst the plays and musicals available via the program are Danny Boyle's Frankenstein, Sally Cookson's takes on Jane Eyre and Peter Pan, Small Island, Les Blancs, and more. Each title is also accompanied by educational materials to help educators work the productions into their curriculum.
“The National Theatre offers the widest access to high quality theatre in the world," says National Executive Director and Co-Chief Executive Kate Varah in a statement. "We’re thrilled to partner with the Educational Theatre Association to bring the National Theatre Collection to classrooms across the United States for free, making world-class theatre more accessible than ever and inspiring students across the world to discover the power of theatre. We have already seen the real impact the National Theatre Collection has been having in schools across New York City and look forward to seeing this continue to grow, sparking creativity and nurturing the next generation of talent in every state in America."
The program is the latest in a trend of bringing filmed theatre to the classroom. A similar program, bringing archive filmings of Broadway shows in New York Public Library's Theatre on Tape and Film collection to New York educators, was announced last month.
