The National Theatre is offering a first look at Deputy Artistic Director Robert Hastie’s reimagining of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, which will officially open in the Lyttelton October 2 following previews that began September 25.
Olivier winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) stars in this contemporary take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. Hamlet will also be broadcast to cinemas through National Theatre Live starting January 22, 2026. (Audiences can find their nearest cinema screening at Hamlet.NTLive.com.)
In addition to Abeysekera in the title role, the cast also
includes Joe Bolland as Guildenstern, Phil Cheadle as Marcellus, Ayesha
Dharker as Gertrude, Ryan Ellsworth as Ghost, Tom Glenister as Laertes,
Mary Higgins as Osric, Liz Jadav as Nurse, Kiren Kebaili-Dwyer
as Fortinbras, Hari Mackinnon as Rosencrantz, Francesca Mills
as Ophelia, Sophia Papadopoulos as Cornelius, Alistair Petrie
as Claudius, Siobhán Redmond as First Player, Seb Slade as Francisco,
Geoffrey Streatfeild as Polonius, Noel White as Bernardo, and Tessa Wong
as Horatio.

Director Hastie is joined on the creative team by set and costume designer Ben Stones, lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound designer Alexandra Faye Braithwaite, composer Richard Taylor, movement director Ira Mandela Siobhan, fight director Kate Waters, casting directors Alastair Coomer and Martin Poile, and associate director Georgie Staight.
Performances are currently scheduled through November 22.
Co-presented with The Grammy Museum, the event came just after the Best Musical winner picked up a 2026 Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.
