Sarah Stiles, who earned a 2015 Tony Award nomination for playing Jessica in Hand to God, is back with a solo self-described “cabaret extravaganza” titled Squirrel Heart, scheduled to return in January 2018 to Joe’s Pub in New York City, where it premiered in 2016.
Written by Stiles and Holly Gewandter with direction by Darren Katz and musical direction by Brian Nash, the show will play January 3 at 7 PM, and January 8 at 9:30 PM.
She said, “It’s been a blast working on the West Coast, but I’ve missed the sparkle of theatre in NYC. I thought what better way to get my fix then work on this crazy show? Squirrel Heart is a marathon of musical genres and caffeinated emotions wrapped up in 20 or so costume changes and big hair. I’m so excited to share it again, and twice!”
Working with her brother, David N. Stiles, the actor created a series of tease videos that give a sense of the show and her style as a solo artist. “This is my world!” she told Playbill. “My brother directed and wanted to keep everything authentic to me and my process. Because he’s my brother and I felt so safe and comfortable with him, the result is just that. We shot them over the course of two days in my apartment. We wrote them on the spot and just played. It was so much fun. I hope you enjoy them.
Playbill is posting the clips over the next few weeks. In this second one, Stiles said, “I learned how to play the ukulele for this show. Here I am workshopping an idea involving one of my weird little morning poems and another very familiar song. My favorite times are the quiet times exploring the kooky parts of the right side of my brain.”
