Based on the 1989 cult favorite film, Heathers: The Musical follows Westerberg High student Veronica Sawyer who's on track to become one of the most popular girls in school after befriending the beautiful but cruel Heathers, only to meet a mysterious teen rebel who changes everything. The work—which features a book, music, and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe—premiered at Los Angeles' Hudson Backstage Theatre in 2013 before moving Off-Broadway the following year. The New York run would prove to be short-lived, running less than four months, but the musical followed the success of its source material to become a cult favorite thanks to its cast album and productions at regional theatres and schools.

The filmed stage performance captures the musical's original London production, which bowed at The Other Palace in 2018 before breaking box-office records and transferring to Theatre Royal Haymarket the same year. Since its debut, the production toured the U.K. and played an encore run at the Haymarket that later transferred back to its original home at The Other Palace, where it was filmed on stage earlier this year.

"We are committed to finding a variety of great ways to bring premium programming to our audience, and there’s nothing like the thrill of a live performance," says Roku Head of Originals David Ellenberg. "That’s why we can’t wait for viewers to experience the sights and sounds of Heathers: The Musical. We’re thrilled to work with Village Roadshow Pictures and BKStudios to capture the on-stage magic and bring it to millions of households to enjoy free on The Roku Channel."

"We’re ecstatic to work with BKStudios and The Roku Channel to directly bring the phenomenal performances in Heathers: The Musical to such a massive U.S. audience," adds Village Roadshow Pictures Executive Vice Presidents Jillian Apfelbaum and Tristen Tuckfield. "The story of Heathers has continued to infatuate fans for decades, and we have no doubt that audiences will be utterly delighted by this live adaptation."
