A musical adaptation of Empire Records is currently in development. At work on translating the 1995 film for the stage are book writer Carol Heikkinen (who penned the original screenplay) and composer Zoe Sarnak (Secret Soldiers, Afterwords).

Bill Weiner is attached as a producer for the project, which currently eyes a 2020 premiere.

The cult favorite follows a group of employees of a record store who band together to save the business from being sold to a mega chain. The cast included Renée Zellwegger, Anthony LaPaglia, Robin Tunney, Rory Cochrane, Ethan Embry, Liv Tyler, Johnny Whitworth, and Maxwell Caulfield.

While the show will feature an original score from Sarnak, the composer does hint that tunes from the original film, including “Say No More, Mon Amour” (performed by Caulfield’s Rex Manning), may make their way to the stage as well.
