The play, according to press notes, "chronicles the life of Chavez after his death when he meets the late Los Angeles Times reporter, Ruben Salazar in the cafe where Salazar was tragically killed 23 years prior."
Begley wrote, produced and directed the original production, which made its 2003 premiere at Hollywood's El Portal Theatre. Cesar and Ruben won a Nos Otros Award and four Valley Theater Awards while gaining enthusiastic support from the Cesar Chavez Foundation, the United Farm Workers and Chavez' widow and children.
The musical features songs in both English and Spanish by Sting, Ruben Blades, Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, Enrique Iglesias, David Crosby and Carmen Moreno.
The cast includes Danny Bolero, Mauricio Mendoza, Crissy Guerrero, Danielle Barbosa, Sandra Purpuro, Gustavo Rex, Tiffany Solano, Rachelle Carson, Jack McGee, Charles Woodruff, Mario Rocha, Bennie Perez, Al Coronel, Dan Domenech, Alejandro Romero, Josette Owens, Eli Vargas and George Spelvin. Musical staging and choreography is by Frankie Anne.
Ed Begley, Jr. is well known for his work on the 1980's series "St. Elsewhere." His other screen credits include "7th Heaven," "Six Feet Under," "Arrested Development" and "Veronica Mars."
