Licensing Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas Now Available for Licensing From Music Theatre International

The musical adaptation features a book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin.

Music Theatre International has announced the musical version of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas is now available for licensing. Based on the classic children's book and animated film, the work features a book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin.

The iconic story follows the mean, green Grinch as he brings his hatred of Christmas to the cheerful residents of Whoville by trying to stop the winter holiday, only to learn the real meaning of Christmas in the process. The musical adaptation includes songs from the animated film adaptation like "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch," plus new songs written for the stage.

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas had its world premiere at Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis in 1994, and opened on Broadway in 2006, with Patrick Page in the title role. The musical has since toured the U.S. and U.K., and a live television special starring Matthew Morrison aired on NBC in 2020.

“Dr. Seuss Enterprises is excited to continue our partnership with Music Theatre International to bring this musical version of everyone’s favorite holiday tale to schools and theatres," Susan Brandt, President and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, said in a statement. "Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas teaches the power of change, the importance of community, and the value of kindness—timeless themes that make The Grinch as relevant today as ever before.”

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas is an iconic musical that has already made a lasting impression on thousands of people across the United States,” added Drew Cohen, President and CEO of Music Theatre International. “We are thrilled at the success the show has had with these previous productions and we cannot wait to introduce this musical to a new generation of performers and audience members waiting to meet the world’s most beloved and redeemable green menace.”
