Disney has announced that Moana 2, a sequel to the beloved animated musical Moana, will hit movie theatres November 27. The film is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. (Encanto); and features music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical), Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina. “Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger said in a statement. “And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”
Casting for Moana 2 has not yet been announced, though a social post from Auli'i Cravalho (who voiced the titled character in the original film) seems to indicate she's involved with the upcoming release. Moana, which was released in November 2016, also featured the voice Dwayne Johnson as Maui.
Moana 2 will reportedly take audiences on an adventure with Moana and a brand-new crew of seafarers. When Moana receives an unexpected call from her ancestors, she "must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced."
As of spring 2023, Disney is also working on a live-action remake of Moana. Directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail, the film features a screenplay by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller; with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina. Johnson also announced that he will return to the role of Maui for the remake.
A stage adaptation of Moana debuted in 2019, part of Music Theatre International's Broadway Junior series.
