Theatre legend Carol Channing passed away January 15. Broadway dimmed its lights January 16—which happened to be the 55th anniversary of the opening of Hello, Dolly! on Broadway. CBS Sunday Morning commemorated the life and career of Channing during the January 20 broadcast of the morning show.
In a clip from her 2005 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Channing said, “My goal ever since the fourth grade when I was seven years old was to lift people’s lives.”
Channing was synonymous with Dolly Gallagher Levi, a role she played over 5,000 times and into her ’70s. She claimed that after every performance, “I'd either feel better or I'd feel cured.” (Channing wrote of her battle with ovarian cancer in her 2002 memoir Just Lucky I Guess.) Watch the full memorial celebration in the video above.
