During their time at STC, the company earned international acclaim for productions of A Streetcar Named Desire and Uncle Vanya, both of which starred Blanchett.

STC chairman David Gonski told the Sydney Morning Herland that the company had been "very, very fortunate to have both Cate and Andrew for what will constitute a six-year period... they have been absolutely excellent. We have always had an international element to the company but now there is absolutely no doubt about that."

STC is beginning the search for new artistic leadership. Upton and Blanchett are expected to work with their successor to determine a 2014 season at STC.

Among the artists who performed at STC are Mel Gibson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Judy Davis, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, Geoffrey Rush, Toni Collette, Rose Byrne and members of the original Broadway cast of August: Osage County.
