Out of the Box Theatrics’ Building the Box series will launch next month with three readings of Trash, a new play written by James Caverly and Andrew Morrill.

Directed by Nathaniel P. Claridad, readings will be held February 5 at 7 PM, February 6 at 1 PM, and February 8 at 7 PM at 154 Christopher Street (formerly the New Ohio Theatre).

The cast, which utilizes mostly Deaf actors and American Sign Language, will feature playwrights Caverly (Only Murders in the Building) and Morrill as well as Adelina Mitchell, Vishal Vaidya (Merrily We Roll Along), Chris Ogren (Lux), Christopher Tester, and Joel Oramas.

Trash follows Tim and Jake, Deaf roommates sharing an apartment in the city, who are polar opposites, each with different views on what it means to be Deaf in a hearing world.

Early versions of Trash—described as a defiant theatrical piece that enables audiences to examine their bias and perceptions of the world they created for Deaf people—were developed by the Brooklyn performance space JACK and IRT Theater.
