The Broadway League, a trade organization counting Broadway producers, theatre owners, and national tour presenters among its membership, has named Jason Laks as its new president. Laks has been serving in the role on an interim basis following the mid-season departure of Charlotte St. Martin earlier this year. Prior to this role, Laks was the League's executive vice president and general counsel.
“Over the past 10 months, we have embarked on a thoughtful and thorough process around this very important decision," says League Board Chair and Broadway producer Kristin Caskey in a statement. "After a national search and extensive interview process, we believe Jason is the right leader for the League at this critical time in our industry. Jason’s detailed knowledge of the industry, rich relationships with membership, and steadfast commitment to the health of Broadway—both in New York and on the road—make him an ideal choice.”
“I am so humbled by this opportunity. I’ve been in love with Broadway since I was a kid watching touring productions at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady," adds Laks. "The magic that happens on stage every night in theatres here in New York and across the country is unique and irreplaceable. This is such a critical moment for Broadway. The League represents people from all corners of this industry, and I’m ready to work with our members and our partners to lead us to new heights."
Laks' appointment follows a 10-month national search, led by a Steering Committee chaired by Sue Frost. Committee members also included League Board Chair Kristin Caskey, Maggie Brohn, Rashad Chambers, Jeff Daniel, Jon Ekeberg, Andrew Flatt, Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, Aaron Lustbader, Jimmy Nederlander Jr., Lauren Reid, Christina Selby, and David Stone. The committee was assisted by Russell Reynolds Associates.
The Broadway League primarily exists to facilitate collective bargaining on standard contracts with the various unions representing professional theatre workers, and also operates a number of programs aimed at audience development on Broadway and beyond. The League also presents the annual Tony Awards with the American Theatre Wing, and the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (also known as The Jimmys).
