Ars Nova is partnering with Lena Waithe to present the world premiere of Brandon Kyle Goodman (Big Mouth, Human Resources)'s Heaux Church, which Goodman will also perform at the Off-Broadway venue October 8-November 8. Opening night will be October 19.
Described as "an unabashed celebration of self-love," Heaux Church is Goodman's version of the sex talk you never got, "inviting us to connect and to unleash our inner heaux," according to press notes. Goodman also describes themselves as "a former pastor's kid."
Lisa Owaki Bierman is directing, with performances to also feature DJ Ari Grooves and Greg Corbino.
Bierman's creative team includes scenic designer Lawrence E. Moten III, costume designer Mika Eubanks, costume stylist Oliver Vaughn, lighting designer Matt Lazarus, sound designer Christopher Darbassie, puppet designer Greg Corbino, and projection designer Stivo Arnoczy. Shiku Thuo will serve as production stage manager, with Devin Gately as assistant stage manager and Cherrye J. Davis as associate director.
“Heaux Church is not just a show—it’s a sermon, a celebration," says Waithe in a statement. "Brandon Kyle Goodman is bringing something to the stage that’s raw and radically healing. I’m honored to stand beside them and Ars Nova to bring this powerful and hilarious play into the world. This is the kind of art that shakes the table—and sets a new one.”
“Brandon is a dynamic artist who has been in the Ars Nova community for years," adds Ars Nova co-Artistic Directors Andrew Neisler and Anna Morton Stacey. "When they shared their dream of making a live show to bring their ‘heauxly’ gospel to the masses, we could not have been more excited to help them bring this vision to life. Brandon is exactly the kind of artist we are thrilled to highlight at Ars Nova—bold, smart, silly, heart-forward, and totally original."
