Concord Theatricals has acquired worldwide English-language licensing rights for Bess Wohl's Liberation, which played its final performance on Broadway at the James Earl Jones Theatre February 1. The company will license the play via its Dramatists Play Service imprint, which will also include the publication of Wohl's script.
The title is currently available for professional licensing.
The work simultaneously tracks two groups of women meeting regularly to talk about their changing lives and the world. In the 1970s, the groups are led by mid-century feminist Lizzie. In modern day, Lizzie's daughter takes up the mantle, ultimately exploring the changing face of activism and what it means to be a woman. The work made its premiere last year Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons before transferring to the Main Stem.
“I am thrilled to partner with Concord on the licensing of Liberation,” says Wohl in a statement. “It is very exciting that this play will have a life beyond Broadway, and I am grateful to partner with a team that is passionate about bold storytelling and is dedicated to getting stories into the hands of artists and audiences across so many communities.”
“We are honored to be handling the licensing for Bess' incredible work,” adds Concord Senior Vice President of Artistic Development Amy Rose Marsh. “In this current political and cultural climate, when gender and individual liberties are under attack, Bess' powerful play infuses these debates with humanity, humor, and history. Liberation is a story for our time, and for generations into the future.”
