Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Appropriate was named Best Revival of a Play at The 77th Annual Tony Awards, held at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater June 16.
Although Jacobs-Jenkins' acclaimed family drama has never been seen on Broadway before, the 11-year-old play was deemed eligible in the Revival of a Play category, having previously enjoyed numerous productions around the country and internationally. This is Jacobs-Jenkins' first Tony and his first play on Broadway, although he contributed additional material to the 2022 revival of The Skin of Our Teeth.
In his acceptance speech, Jacobs-Jenkins spoke to the other nominated play revivals of the season. "I'm gonna be honest, I really want to share my small part of this big award with ... [Purlie Victorious playwright] Ossie Davis, [and] his family, because the truth is without Ossie Davis, I wouldn't be here," Jacobs-Jenkins said. "Without Purlie Victorious, Appropriate would not be here. I know people come up here and say it all the time, but it's true. If you guys want this, we can figure out an arrangement of custody. He can haunt my bedroom. I don't care. Tell me the secrets. And for those of you worried about [An Enemy of the People playwright] Henrik Ibsen, he's been dead for over 100 years and he's already won this twice. Thank you guys so much."
