Marianna Gailus, who performed all the roles in the recent one-person VANYA (as understudy to Andrew Scott), will star in the title role of Yale Repertory Theatre's upcoming production of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler.
The final production staged by Artistic Director James Bundy after 23 years of leadership, performances are scheduled for November 28-December 20 at the New Haven, Connecticut, venue. The adaptation was penned by Paul Walsh.
Joining Gailus in the cast will be Austin Durant (Moulin Rouge! The Musical) as Judge Brack, Felicity Jones Latta (Metamorphoses) as Juliane Tesman, Stephanie Machado as Thea Elvsted, Max Gordon Moore (Indecent) as Jorgen Tesman, Mary Lou Rosato (Once Upon a Mattress) as Berte, and James Udom (The Rolling Stone) as Eilert Lovborg. Understudies include Jack Kelley, Rebecca Rivera, Erik Manuel Robles, Emma Steiner, Mark Yarde, and Grace Wissinkfor.
Ibsen’s 1890 play follows the newly married Hedda Tesman (née Gabler), who wasn’t born and raised for a life of contented domesticity. When a former lover returns to town, her husband’s academic career and finances suddenly hang in the balance, along with her social standing.
“I’m so happy to have been able to reach out to actors I admire and adore and have them all say yes,” says director Bundy in a statement. “Every Ibsen play is an opportunity to reclaim the power and scope of great drama, not as an historical or museum exercise but as an interpretive and craft-based investigation that is deeply human and theatrically satisfying. I’m overjoyed to be working to do that with a gifted translator like Paul Walsh, this terrific cohort of actors, and a brilliant team of designers.”
The production will also feature scenic design by Jessie Baldinger, costume design by Lyle Laize Qin, lighting design by Larry Ortiz, sound design by Emilee Biles, hair design by Matthew Armentrout, production dramaturgy by Tim Hartel, technical direction by Steph Lo, fight and intimacy direction by Kelsey Rainwater, vocal and dialect coaching by Walton Wilson, casting direction by Calleri Jensen Davis, and stage management by Narda E. Alcorn.
Bundy, who will continue teaching at David Geffen School of Drama and Yale College following his retirement from full-time responsibilities, is the longest-serving Dean of David Geffen School of Drama and Artistic Director of Yale Repertory Theatre.
