The short-lived Broadway musical American Psycho will make its Australian premiere this spring in an all-new production at the Hayes Theatre Co. in Sydney.
Featuring a score by Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening songwriter Duncan Sheik and a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa—the writer behind the Broadway reboot of Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark and Netflix’s dark update of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch franchise—American Psycho has been rarely produced since its 2014 Broadway outing, which ran for 81 performances.
Ben Gerrard will star in the pop-infused adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel about a Wall Street Banker who moonlights as a sex-addicted serial killer. The role was originated on screen by Christian Bale and on Broadway by Benjamin Walker.
The score incorporates 1980s hits from Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, New Order, and Huey Lewis and the News.
Presented by BB-Arts & Two Doors Productions, American Psycho will run May 10–June 9. Alexander Berlage will direct with musical direction by Dominic Woodhead.
