Tony-winning Floyd Collins and The Light in the Piazza songwriter Adam Guettel will host a master class centered on the Broadway singing voice with the National Association of Teachers of Singing October 13.
The event, held from 2-9 PM in Guettel's personal NYC studio, will feature two three-hour sessions in which Guettel will work with five singers. From 5-6 PM, there will be a meet-and-greet reception with Guettel and special guests, including Steven Pasquale and Justin Ellington. Tickets for non-participating audience members are available at NATS.org.
The master class is the first in what NATS is making a biennial tradition, with the entire series given in memory of famed voice teacher to the Broadway stars Florence Birdwell. A longtime voice professor at Oklahoma City University, Birdwell's students include many Broadway notables, including Guettel's Light in the Piazza original cast member Kelli O'Hara and Queen of Versailles star and producer Kristin Chenoweth, both Tony winners.
Guettel was most recently represented on Broadway with Lincoln Center Theater's Tony-nominated revival of his 1996 musical Floyd Collins, written with Tina Landau. His musicals have also included Myths and Hymns, The Light in the Piazza, and Days of Wine and Roses. Though primarily a composer and lyricist, Guettel is also an accomplished vocalist, singing on the original studio album of Myths and Hymns, among other major releases.
