From Brooklyn to Bryant Park, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:

New York City Opera returns to Bryant Park for two concerts this week. August 18, the company will present From Vienna To Broadway!, a celebration of 20th century music ranging from Lehar’s The Merry Widow to Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. Expect works by Herbert, Romberg, Gershwin, Loesser, and Bernstein, performed by seven New York City Opera stars.

August 19, tenor Alessandro Lora joins the New York City Opera orchestra in Bryant Park for “a special concert of Italian favorites.” Both concerts are free and open to the public.

The Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD Summer Encores concludes August 16 with a rebroadcast of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. The 2007 performance of Robert Carsen’s acclaimed production stars baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as the titular Onegin, and soprano Renée Fleming as Tatiana, the young woman who falls unrequitedly in love with him. Tenor Ramón Vargas plays Lensky, Onegin’s friend and later rival. Based on the novel by Pushkin, Eugene Onegin is a staple of the operatic canon, and the most popular opera by Tchaikovsky.

Although the Live in HD Summer Encores series will end this week, it will be followed by the Met’s annual Summer HD Festival on Lincoln Center Plaza. See the lineup for the ten-day festival here.

Bargemusic will present three concerts this weekend. August 18, pianists Asiya Korepanova and Ilya Kazantsev will perform four-hand works by Bach, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, and Mendelssohn. August 19, violinist Mark Peskanov and pianist Doris Stevenson will perform works by Brahms, Bach, Sibelius, and Sarasate. August 20, cellist Julian Schwarz and pianist Marika Bournaki will perform works by Schuman, Beethoven, and Poulenc.
