The traditionally proper citizens of 1880s Manhattan had a bit of fun during a filming break.

Aren't they rich?

When some of the best of Broadway—who play the wealthy denizens of Manhattan during The Gilded Age—are waiting for the rain to pass while filming a scene in Newport, Rhode Island, turns out they do what the rest of us do to kill time: sing Broadway showtunes.

Tony winner Donna Murphy, who plays Mrs. Astor, captured the company performing a unique rendition of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" while waiting for filming to restart. In a nod to the original interpreter Glynis Johns, watch Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Kelli O'Hara, and more tackle the A Little Night Music classic in the Instagram video below, posted by co-star Murphy.

In February 1973 Broadway audiences first heard the Sondheim ballad "Send in the Clowns," when Johns created the role of Desiree Armfeldt in the Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical A Little Night Music, which won 1973 Tony Awards for Johns, Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Patricia Elliott), and Best Costume Design. Both Frank Sinatra and Judy Collins subsequently recorded "Send in the Clowns," making the song what is still, perhaps, Sondheim's best-known tune.

It was recently announced that The Gilded Age has been renewed for a fourth season. The third season finale of the Julian Fellowes-created series debuted on HBO Max August 10.
