The iconic Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City will host a special exhibition of original drawings and hand-signed limited-edition prints of famed Broadway caricaturist Al Hirschfeld September 9-20. Titled Strokes of Genius: Hirschfeld at the Algonquin, the exhibition will be open to the public noon-7 PM daily. A special opening-night celebration is planned for September 9 at 5 PM.
Included in the collection are more than two dozen works, including Judy Garland at the Palace; Yul Brynner and Gertrude Lawrence in The King and I; Gwen Verdon in Redhead; Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier in The Defiant Ones; Ethel Waters, Howard Deitz, Bea Lillie, and more backstage At Home Abroad; Carol Burnett, George Gershwin, and more.
To celebrate the September 9 release of Hirschfeld's Sondheim, a new book celebrating the artist's drawings of the late composer-lyricist's shows and the man himself, the exhibition will also include a special display devoted to Stephen Sondheim and his landmark musicals. Included are Hirschfeld's takes on Sunday in the Park With George, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Passion, Putting it Together, and more. Hirschfeld's Sondheim can be pre-ordered at AlHirschfeldFoundationShop.org.
A self-described “characterist,” Hirschfeld's signature work, defined by a linear calligraphic style, appeared in major publications of the last nine decades, as well as numerous book and record covers, and 15 postage stamps. Among Hirschfeld's accolades are two Special Tony Awards and the Medal of Arts from the National Endowment of the Arts. His work became so synonymous with 20th century Broadway that in 2003, he was made the namesake of a Broadway theatre. The Al Hirschfeld Theatre is currently home to Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
"With Strokes of Genius: Hirschfeld at the Algonquin, we are thrilled to make this Al Hirschfeld artwork available in a gallery exhibition for the first time in well-over a decade in New York City," says Hirschfeld Foundation Creative Director David Leopold in a statement. “Dozens of works, originals, and lithographs will be on display for the public to view, and perhaps, to purchase for their own personal collections."
Helicline Fine Art's online exhibition Hirschfeld: Strokes of Genius will be available alongside the Algonquin offering, September 10-November 2 at HeliclineFineArt.com as previously announced.
