Pour yourself a cup of ambition—but junior-sized! Music Theatre International has released 9 to 5 The Musical JR. for licensing. The new 60-minute adaptation of the 2009 musical has been created expressly for performers under the age of 18.
The musical—which features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton (including the chart-topping title song) and a book by Patricia Resnick—is adapted from the 1980 film of the same name, following three female coworkers who work to liberate their 1970s workplace from the tyranny of their boss. Parton starred in the original non-musical film, writing and singing the title song. Parton's score of mostly new songs written for the stage version includes "Get Out and Stay Out," which has become an empowerment anthem favorite among showtune fans that Parton herself has also recorded.
“9 to 5 JR. is a wonderful adaption of the hilarious Broadway musical that will introduce a new generation of voices to this outrageous, but empowering story,” says MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen in a statement. “This musical embraces the important theme of workplace challenges with wit, humor, and heartfelt songs.”
The new version, part of MTI's Broadway Junior collection, has been adapted under the supervision of iTheatrics' Timothy Allen McDonald.
Theatres producing 9 to 5 JR., or any of MTI's Broadway Junior catalogue, can make their own Broadway-quality Playbill programs using PLAYBILLDER, Playbill's fully customizable program creation platform—the only authorized way to have a real Playbill, complete with the iconic yellow-and-black logo, at a school production. Users can auto-populate their program with all the MTI-approved data for the show, including billing information and song and character lists.
