Playbill Travel 5 Places to Celebrate Oktoberfest in NYC

Here are five beer gardens where you can have a beverage, mingle with friends, and enjoy the fall.

Ahh, yes. As the golden light of September bathes Manhattan in a gentle glow, a new kind of performance is taking shape outdoors. One with clinking steins, sizzling bratwurst, and the joyous hum of conversation. That’s right, it’s Oktoberfest Season!

Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany, in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Bavaria. Originally held in October and featuring a public horse race, the festival was repeated and expanded over the years, eventually moving its start date to September to take advantage of the better weather and longer days. And thank goodness they did!

While Oktoberfest's roots are firmly in Munich, its spirit has transcended borders to become a truly global celebration; and few places embrace it with as much passion in New York City. The tradition lives on in a big way, with the city hosting a vibrant lineup of festivals and events that transform the streets and beer gardens into lively celebrations.

Thanks to the Playbill Partner Hotels Booking Engine, here are five places we recommend celebrating the season!

Loreley Beer Garden (Lower East Side)

Known for its expansive and heated outdoor space, Loreley is a classic choice for Oktoberfest! It embraces the festive spirit with seasonal decorations, a special Oktoberfest beer, and a fantastic menu of German fare like pretzels and sausages. Their Oktoberfest celebration typically runs from mid-September to the end of October, making it a perfect spot to kick off the season.

    Bierhaus NYC (Midtown East)

Located near Grand Central, Bierhaus is a traditional Bavarian-style beer hall that fully immerses you in the Oktoberfest vibe. They are known for their large steins of Hofbräu beer, authentic German cuisine, and “The Shotski.” While Bierhaus is a beer hall, they too have a large space and lively atmosphere that captures the outdoor beer garden feel. It's a perfect group outing!

      The Standard Biergarten (Meatpacking District)

Tucked under the High Line, this is stylish and popular outdoor spot offers a more modern take on the traditional biergarten as they serve classic German food and beer in a bustling, social environment. It's an excellent choice for those looking for a lively, see-and-be-seen atmosphere with a great outdoor space. Plus, on a beautiful evening with a great sunset bouncing off the buildings, great photo moments abound!

        Watermark (Pier 15, Financial District)

I put this in the just because while it is not a traditional German biergarten, Watermark hosts a large, annual Oktoberfest celebration on Pier 15! With stunning waterfront views, this spot is a great option for those who want a more festival-like experience with a beautiful backdrop. They offer a variety of German beers, food, and often feature live music and games just steps from South Street Seaport!

Zum Schneider’s “Munich in Brooklyn” (Brooklyn)

A longtime favorite of mine for authentic German culture, Zum Schneider is a beloved, a genuine, Bavarian experience. While its restaurant closed in 2020 (take note, they say on their website they’re planning on reopening this year), they continue to hold authentic Oktoberfest pop-up experiences with live music, food, beers, and festivating. If you do get to Zum Schneider, you must have their schnitzel. It's 10/10 no notes, outstanding!

Whether you're a theatregoer looking for a post-show drink or a local seeking to celebrate the season, these five fantastic biergartens and outdoor spots near Broadway are the perfect place to raise a glass to the changing season. Prost!
