Lea Michele, the musical theatre actor who achieved TV fame during six seasons of the Fox series Glee, has been cast in ABC's currently untitled City Mayor pilot, according to Deadline. As previously announced, Hamilton Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs will executive produce the single-camera comedy.
Michele, whose Broadway credits include Spring Awakening, Ragtime, and Les Miserables, will co-star opposite Brandon Micheal Hall. She was released from her deal with the TV series Scream Queens by creator-producer Ryan Murphy in order to be part of the ABC program.
Jeremy Bronson, who penned the script, also produces. James Griffiths will direct.
The series, according to the industry website, “centers on Courtney Rose (Hall), a struggling hip-hop artist who runs for mayor to promote his mixtape—and wins.” A description of Michele's character has not been revealed; whether she will utilize her vocal talents on the program has also yet to be determined.
Diggs, who won a Tony for his performance as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the megahit musical Hamilton, executive produces along with Jamie Tarses, Griffiths, Scott Stuber & Dylan Clark’s Bluegrass FanFare. Diggs, whose TV acting credits include The Get Down and Black-ish, will not act in the series.
