Gaiety Theatre

The Gaiety Theatre, constructed in 1908 and located at 1547 Broadway at 46th Street, was owned by producing team Klaw and Erlanger, who managed the house with George M. Cohan and his partner Sam Harris. Architects Herts & Tallant designed the theatre. The Gaiety Theatre featured theatre legends Helen Hayes, John Barrymore, and Douglas Fairbanks. John Golden’s 1918 comedy Lightin’ was the first Broadway show in history to give more than 1,000 performances. The Gaiety Theatre presented famous stripteasers Ann Corio and Gypsy Rose Lee as well as comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. No longer presenting legitimate productions, it became a movie theatre and was renamed the Victoria in 1942. The Gaiety Theatre was named the Embassy in the 1970s, and it was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriot Marquis.
