The American Theatre was constructed at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue and opened May 22, 1893. Its most famous production was its first show, The Prodigal Daughter, which featured a steeplechase of ten live horses onstage. On December 8, 1930, a fire broke out and ruined the theatre; its doors never opened again.
