The Play Group Theatre (PGT), a Westchester based non-profit educational theatre organization dedicated to providing diverse theatre making experiences and performance opportunities to children and teenagers, is seeking a part time Wardrobe Assistant. PGT provides year-round theatre programming for students pre K-12, including seven productions annually, including three First Stage shows in our black box Jonah Mac Theatre, and four MainStage shows in our MainStage Theatre. PGT’s state-of-the-art facility is located in White Plains, NY, easily accessible by Metro North or car.
We are seeking artists who possess imagination, flexibility and the desire to work with children and teenagers of varied ages in a creatively charged and artistically demanding, yet nurturing environment. Our staff must be prepared to work as a member of a strong creative team, and to juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
Responsibilities include:
Maintain cleanliness and organization of costume storage, costume shop, dressing rooms, and all wardrobe areas
Ensure costumes are clean, repaired, steamed, and performance-ready
Load-in and Strike all First Stage and MainStage productions
Wash, dry and sort laundry, label items, clean and store costumes, hats, shoes and accessories properly
Assist in the costume shop with stitching, alterations, and repairs.
Reinforce buttons, quick rig garments, repair rips/tears, repair/alter hems, label garments.
Assist in maintaining all garments during the run of a show and assist in necessary repairs and upkeep
Perform regular wig maintenance, including cleaning, styling, and resetting and ensure the proper storage, cleanliness, and organization of wigs, hair accessories, and styling tools.
Monitor costume shop supplies and communicate material needs.
Maintain knowledge of costume, wig, shoe, hat and accessories stock and assist in pulling items when necessary.
Attend fittings to assist and take notes.
Assist with costume changes backstage during technical rehearsals and performances, as needed.
Assist with costume plot/actor costume tracking sheets, as needed.
Apply wigs for technical rehearsals and performances, as needed
Applicants should possess
Machine and hand sewing skills
The ability and willingness to climb a ladder
The ability and willingness to lift, carry and move multiple costumes at a time up and down stairs
Comfort working with a variety of fabrics, including vintage and delicate fabrics
Excellent time management and organizational skills
The ability to juggle multiple projects at once
A working knowledge of costume design, construction, and costume shop operations
A desire to practice collaboration
Grace and a sense of humor under pressure
A sense of playfulness balanced with a fierce work ethic
The qualities necessary to be a positive role model for children and teenagers
The ability to apply the “yes AND” rule of improv to the workplace
Experience being bombarded with children and all their stuff and a good deal of noise, and thrive in that setting!
