BREAKDOWN

THIRD AVENUE PLAYHOUSE 2026 SEASON

SEEKING:

HEROES:
HENRI: (Male Presenting, age range 60s-80s, any ethnicity) is a man of the people from a humble background. He’s Intelligent and a natural leader. A man of reason and common sense but quite grumpy. He has a war wound injury which leaves him with a limp and he walks with a stick.

GUSTAVE: (Male Presenting, age range 60s-80s, any ethnicity) is a blustering aristocrat. He sees himself as privileged and a leader because of his status rather than his skills. Rather full of his own importance. He is agoraphobic. This role requires some physical exertion as he carries another actor on his back

PHILIPPE: (Male Presenting, age range 60s-80s, any ethnicity) is a mild mannered, gentle soul from a ‘middle class’ background. He has some shrapnel in his brain which causes him to ‘pass out‘ from time to time. At times he is understated and soft spoken, that is until he takes command.

MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS:

BEN HECHT (Male Presenting; late 20’s-40’s, any ethnicity): A screenwriter and playwright hired to rewrite the screenplay for Gone With The Wind, only he hasn’t read the novel the film is based on and and is pretty sure the project is doomed to failure. As a former newspaperman, he struggles with applying his ideals of social justice to the story. Can be cynical, or sarcastic, often at odds with Victor Fleming.

Victor Fleming (Male Presenting, Age range: 40-50’s, any ethnicity): A Hollywood director with a big personality, who Selznick has just pulled away from The Wizard of Oz to work on Gone with the Wind. Confident to a fault, known as a “man’s director.” A company man through and through, got his start getting his hands dirty as a mechanic and chauffeur.

David O. Selznick (Male Presenting, Age Range: 30-40’s, any ethnicity): Gone With The Wind’s driven movie producer and son-in-law of the studio boss, Louis B. Mayer. Through questionable motives, he cares about getting the minutia of the movie exactly right. He will do anything to make Gone with the Wind a hit.

Miss Poppenghul (Female Presenting, Age Range: 30-50’s, any ethnicity): The tireless, longsuffering and exceptionally efficient assistant of Mr. Selznick. She is constantly on-call and fulfills each request made during the men’s five-day confinement – but it does take its toll.

RED HERRING:

MAGGIE PELLETIER (Female Presenting, Age Range: 30-40s, any ethnicity) Hard boiled Boston homicide detective. Sharp as a razor, keen wit. Always gets her man. Engaged to Frank. Strong comic timing, and presence.

FRANK KELLER (Male Presenting, Age Range: 30-40’s, any ethnicity) A ‘G’ man, Frank works for the FBI hunting spies and saboteurs. He is driven by his work, but wants more from life than work. In love with Maggie. Strong comic timing. Doubles as: PRIEST, MAJOR HARTWELL.

LYNN MCCARTHY (Female Presenting, Age Range: 20s, any ethnicity) A young, naive, romantic idealist. Dating James. She is the daughter of the notorious Senator McCarthy. Strong comic timing. Doubles as: CLERK

JAMES APPEL (Male Presenting, Age Range: 20s, any ethnicity) A young nuclear physicist working in New Mexico on nuclear weapons. He is a peacenik idealist who ends up spying for the Soviets. In love with Lynn. Strong comic timing. Doubles as: WOODY, HARRY, BARTENDER.

MRS. KRAVITZ (Female Presenting, Age Range: 40s-50s, any ethnicity) Working class Boston landlady. In love with Andrei, will do anything for him. Strong comic timing. Doubles as: MRS. MCCARTHY, MRS. VAN NOSTRAND

ANDREI BORCHEVSKY (Male Presenting, Age Range: 50s, any ethnicity) Soviet spy working under deep cover as a fisherman in Boston. In love with Mrs. Kravitz. Strong comic timing. Doubles as: PETEY, DR. KASDEN, HERBERT, CORPSE

THE CALL LIST

SAM: (female presenting, age: 20s-30s, any ethnicity) a restless dreamer, anxious doodler, and professional wanderer in search of purpose. She is stuck in a job she does not love, wondering what should be next. She is smart, and maybe a little lost.
