Breakdown

THE TURNING

SYNOPSIS: A cross between Spring Awakening and Midsommar, The Turning is a new folk musical thriller about two best friends in search of healing who go to a California desert-based wellness retreat, which ultimately reveals itself to be something else entirely.

SEEKING:

[NORA] OFFER OUT. (she/her, late 20s, mezzo with strong belt) A deeply sensitive, raw, incredibly serious, yet subtly warm person - Nora moved to LA to stay with her high school friend Gracie after a traumatic experience. She’s been unable to hold down a job for years. Navigating depression, she is clearly in terrible pain - but through that, is enormously empathetic and bright. Someone who is running away from her past, and herself.

[GRACIE] OFFER OUT. (she/her, early 30s, mezzo with a strong folk/Americana flavor) The opposite of Nora in many ways - Gracie is a full-time lifestyle influencer on social media. Conventionally attractive in every way, bubbly, flirty, lighthearted - approaches life almost as if it’s a playground. Yet she is a fierce and loyal friend, who loves Nora deeply.

[BEN] (he/him, mid/late 40s, pop baritenor) An enigmatic type who always wears the same outfit. Seems to walk a fine line between hippie guru and corporate executive - Ben has an answer for everything and you get the sense he is always selling something.

[KEENAN] OFFER OUT. (he/him, early/mid 30s, tenor) Similar to Nora in so many ways - rebellious because of a misplaced intelligence. Nihilistic but charming - existential and fun.

[DEIDRE] OFFER OUT. (she/her, early/mid 30s, alto) Too cool for school - the exact kind of woman that Gracie always falls for. More self-confidence than anyone you’ve ever met, she seems to always be one step ahead of the conversation, and every sentence could be flirty.

[CHARLIE] (she/her, 18+ (by 7.21.26) to play 16, soprano) The mysterious leader of Oasis. She – and the members of Oasis – believe she has evolved the ability to heal people’s trauma. Incredibly charming, incredibly confident - almost feels like she can stare right into your soul. It feels like she knows you the moment you meet her and makes you want her approval more than anything.

[ENSEMBLE] (18-60s age range, all ethnicities, ages, and vocal parts) The ensemble defines the world and portrays a range of characters throughout the musical. Every ensemble track will be featured in some way. Most will understudy principal roles. All must be strong pop singers. Looking for ensemble members that both move well and some that are strong dancers.
