BREAKDOWN

THE IRREPRESSIBLE MAGIC OF THE TROPICS

SYNOPSIS: Welcome to the Buenos Cruces, a town in a magical forest in the heart of Latin America — and the latest manufacturing location for Cantilever Inc., a multinational corporation that specializes in everything from sandals to cigarettes. But as his family settles into their new lives in the jungle, Cantilever Vice President, John C. Dulk is mysteriously absent, leaving his wife, Julie, to navigate the challenges of keeping their family, and the factory afloat in this strange and surreal setting.A wildly theatrical send up of magical realism, The Irrepressible Magic of the Tropics is at once a farcical romp through Latin American history and literature and a critical exploration of capitalism, colonialism and US-led economic imperialism.

We are looking to cast a diverse company of actors who understand and can portray the sensibilities and idiosyncrasies of these characters. We are also seeking performers who have a great sense of humor and comedic timing.

INTAR Theatre and the artistic team highly encourages actors of traditionally underrepresented communities to audition for the World Premiere of The Irrepressible Magic of the Tropics.

SEEKING:

JULIE DULK (née Wilkerson - changed from Wilkovsky) - Female-Identifying, 30s-40s, American, any race or ethnicity. She has a white-bread suburban background but deep inside there's a yen to lose herself in the unknown. Studied French in school. The wife of the vice president of Cantilever inc. Mother to a darling baby and two rambunctious teens. She is navigating how to build and maintain a household while also discovering and understanding this new and challenging magical world. NOTES: Knowledge of French is a plus. Actors of color are encouraged to audition.

JOHN C. DULK JR. (JIMINY) - Male-Identifying, 20s-30s, American, any race or ethnicity. Newborn Son of the Vice President of Cantilever inc. As a baby. A baby. As a grown man, an all-american boy with a fair helping of Biff/Happy, he has a clarity and elegance to his thought but also has never had to inherit either the full anglo-protestant schtick, or really the hardship of the tropics. He lives in between – sort of like the white-savior (Avatar, Dances with Wolves etc etc). NOTE: Actors of color are encouraged to audition.

VICTORIA DULK - Female-Identifying, 20s, American, any race or ethnicity. She is the teenage daughter of Carina and John. The very literal golden child. Her hair won't stop growing. She has an angelic demeanor, but also has that kind of brutality and viscerality that comes with the overly innocent. Her innocence does not translate to her relationship with her sister where she is just as conniving and competitive. NOTE: Actors of color are encouraged to audition.

GLORIA DULK - Female-Identifying, 20s, American, any race or ethnicity. The twin sister of Victoria. She is the odd-sister out. Losing her hair. She's a lot more vocal - mostly to get heard but it never works. Very intelligent, but first she has to get out of her way and her emotions. She understands more than most characters. NOTE: Actors of color are encouraged to audition.

TRACK 1 - Latine, Female-Identifying, 30s-40s. Pandolfa - the nanny/revolutionary spy, she is excellent at taking care of the household, and maintaining order, knows all the goings on, but is also secretly harboring revenge. A foil for Julie. Doña Certeza - The nurse – very grounded and aware of everything, has the sort of brusqueness that is the result of seeing so many people die of plague and war wounds for years. Irma Estancia - Second in command for the guerillas, lots of common-sense. A bit more grounded than her first in command. Soon becomes fluent in French/German. Pantulfa - the suddenly grown daughter of Pandolfa. Has Pandolfa's motherly instinct. Is very sweet. Maybe not as much of a revolutionary but is also no fool. NOTE: Fluent/native speaker in Spanish a plus. Knowledge of French/German is a plus.

TRACK 2 - Latine, Male-Identifying, late 30s-50s. Don Elitorio - The architect. Wise and well-read. Glad to help the Dulks. Lausano - The steward – also wise but has a bit more understanding of the legends and knows everyone in town. Always ready to lend a helping hand and has a particular talent with dealing with the teens. Permite Dulzón - the factory manager, a laughable man, he is a bit pigeon-toed and always stressed out. Dealing with all the chaos going on in the factory plus a plague, plus a civil war. Gavioto Cantimpalo - the young love-struck priest. Has fallen bordering on the religiously obsessive for Victoria Dulk. He is someone whose passion for life has been transmitted to the lord, and now to Victoria Dulk's hair. Clemente Caudillo - the head of the guerillas, he is stern, a bit less responsible than his second in command, and finds himself a bit over his head at the moment. Gurnacha - the healer, old lover of Pandolfa, and burgeoning capitalist. Is a deeply holy man, who is able to channel the magic of both the tropics and the cantilever products. NOTE: Fluent/native speaker in Spanish a plus. Comfortable singing in public.
