BREAKDOWN

KOWALSKI

SYNOPSIS: KOWALSKI deals with the first meeting of playwright Tennessee Williams and Marlon Brando when Brando hitchhikes to Los Angeles to audition for the role of Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire".

SEEKING:

TENNESSE WILLIAMS: Male; mid-late 30s. A young playwright at the height of his powers. A gay man who was openly out at a time when most of his peers hid safely in the closet. He has a wicked fast wit that he employs as a defense mechanism. Riddled with insecurity that he is never good enough, he can lash out when cornered. He can turn on the charm to ultimate perfection. Tennessee flirts with anyone to get what he wants.

MARLON BRANDO: Male; early-mid 20s. A young, smart rebellious actor who has not yet made a name for himself. He has done a few Broadway plays but little else. He is unpredictable, fearless and charming. Marlon loves to manipulate people and test them to see how they will react. he knows when to stay silent and observe when it helps his cause. He oozes a natural sexuality and can be playful and menacing at the drop of a hat.

MARGO JONES: Female; mid 30s-early 40s, any ethnicity. A raucous, funny Texan. She was the first director of Tennessee's plays. She is one of Williams' closest friends, a combination mother figure and drinking buddy. She has a chip on her shoulder because Tennessee won't let her direct his latest play. She's the closest friend to Tennessee, yet still feels expendable to him.

PANCHO RODRIGUEZ: Male; mid 20s-early 30s. Tennessee's Mexican-American lover and the inspiration for Stanley Kowalski. He is passionate and angry, always trying to prove that his lover thinks less of him. He is volatile, smart and very sexy. He tries to connect with Tennessee on a deep level. Pancho doesn't put up with Tennessee's mistreatment. He knows that Tennessee hates not getting his way and he uses that to his advantage.

JO: Female; early-mid 20s; any ethnicity. Although a fictitious character, Jo is based on any number of young women who flocked to New York and the Village in the late 1950s to make it as an actor or an artist. She is waif-like, innocent with a streetwise side that comes out when she fees threatened. She's in awe of Tennessee at first glance. She has no fear of Brando's temperament, enjoying making fun of him to get an emotional response. She unfortunately lets her forgiving nature get in the way of his common sense.
