Storyline:

Fall of 2008. Ghazni Province, Afghanistan-- 2nd Platoon, Bravo Company.

The art of war has come a long way from '"we few, we happy few, we band of brothers," but it remains what it has always been: an uneasy balance of boredom and hypervigilance, teenage angst and mortal peril. It still ends where it always has.

SEEKING:

Dramatis Personae

82nd Airborne Division, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Battalion of the 504th Infantry Regiment.

Bravo Company, mostly 2d Platoon.

Captain Annalise Barker (O-3). 26. ‘Skipper’

From Gray’s Creek, North Carolina. Company CO.

Fourth tour: Iraq (x2), Afghanistan (x2).
She’s been in FS Donovan’s Company since she was a 2d Lieutenant. Eldest of four, started college at NC State, but didn’t finish in order to go to OCS. It was the Army or keep working on the hog farm. Became an officer because a drill sergeant in basic said she couldn’t. Toughest motherfucker in the valley.

First Lieutenant Steven Lemonnier (O-2). 28. ‘Lemonade’ ‘Lemony Snicket’ ‘Professor’

From Fayetteville, North Carolina. PL for 2d platoon.

Third tour: Iraq (x2), Afghanistan.

Hometown friend of Barker; they grew up together. West Point Class of ‘03. Scored almost perfectly on his ASVAB; was courted by special forces and intelligence but he chose infantry. Resident liberal (Democrat, he would argue); always squared up; bad liar. Can’t stop smoking.

First Sergeant Jack Donovan (E-8). 38. ‘The Don’ ‘Donnie’ ‘Momovan’ ‘Mom’

From Crested Butte, Colorado. Company NCO.

Seventh tour: Iraq (x2), Afghanistan, Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Yugoslavia, Bosnia.
Married to Darcy for eight years. Legacy soldier: both parents and most other family members served in some capacity. Reads a lot of nonfiction, has an insatiable sweet tooth. If he ever stops deploying, he really wants a puppy.

Sergeant Elijah Griffin (E-5). 28.

From Highland Falls, New York. NCO for 2d platoon.

Second tour: Afghanistan (x2).

Engaged to Emma. He watched Manhattan go up in smoke in 2001. Served in the reserves for three years before switching to active duty. Spent most of his teens working in the kitchens at West Point; wants to be a cook after getting out. Grew up perpetually trying to distinguish himself from his twin brother-- succeeded in spades.

Corporal Eric Mahoney (E-4). 22. ‘Mahogany’ ‘Erica’

From Odessa, Texas.

Third tour: Iraq, Afghanistan (x2). Weapons specialist and gunner.

Transferred from the 1st of the 501st during surge personnel issues. Only child, the son of a carpenter and a woman who was never impressed. Never believed in Jesus even though he really wants to. Probably deeply insecure, but unfortunately still damn good at his job. Resident asshole.

Specialist Leon Cruz (E-4). 21. ‘Lee-own’ ‘Lionel’

From Sante Fe, New Mexico.
Second tour: Iraq, Afghanistan. Gunner.
Did his last tour with Lieutenant Lemonierre as well; still finds him to be a complete enigma. Relentless flirt with everyone. Very touchy. His sunshiney demeanor masks an immense internal strength, sensed by most and trusted by all.

Private First Class Charles Daniels (E-3). 23. ‘Charlie Brown’ ‘Boy Scout’

From Hanover, Virginia.

First tour.

Incredibly competent and earnest. Easy to make fun of; hard to stay mad at. Has read the Ranger Handbook and took notes. His late father taught him many things, including: ‘Good men use good language; about themselves, around other people, and certainly towards women.’ He was listening. Grew up dreaming of leaders like Donovan and Barker; he is uncharacteristically nervous around both. Sober.

Private Michael Lonegan (E-2). 19.

From Haley, Iowa.

First tour. Platoon field medic.

Girlfriend Hailey is still finishing her final year of high school. Smart as a whip and indispensable. When he was younger, he wanted to be a veterinarian. Only child of a single mom. Has spent his life acting older than his age, but it is unavoidable here. He worries, sometimes, that he’s not more scared of war.
