PREPARATION

Please prepare one Bob Dylan song or a song in a similar folk/Americana style (no more than 2 minutes), and one contemporary monologue (no longer than 2 minutes). Each performer will be allotted a maximum of 5 minutes. A piano and accompanist will be available, but we recommend accompany themselves

GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY

SEEKING:

NICK LAINE – 40s–50s. Male-identifying. Owner of the guesthouse. A man worn down by the Depression and the pressure of keeping his family afloat—capable of tenderness, anger, and moral compromise. Carries authority and volatility without losing humanity. Vocal: Baritone / baritenor; comfortable lower register with expressive mid-range.

ELIZABETH LAINE – 40s–50s. Female-identifying. Nick’s wife. Once sharp and socially capable, now living with severe mental illness. With emotional transparency and specificity—fragility, sudden clarity, and presence. Vocal: Alto / mezzo; grounded, haunting tone; comfortable in lower-to-mid range.

MARIANNE LAINE – Early 20s. Female-identifying. Nick and Elizabeth’s daughter. Withdrawn, observant, and emotionally guarded; a still center who absorbs the room. Communicates her interior life with minimalism and precision. Vocal: Mezzo / soprano; intimate, vulnerable sound; strong storytelling.

GENE LAINE – Late teens–early 20s. Male-identifying. Marianne’s adopted brother. Gentle, hopeful, and deeply sensitive; has a stutter. Vocal: Tenor / high baritone; clear, earnest tone; harmonyfriendly. NOTE: GENE's stutter requires care, truth, and ease (no “indication”).

ELIAS BURKE – Teen (plays younger). Male-identifying. Nick and Elizabeth’s son. Lives with a cognitive disability; sweet-natured, sensitive, and easily overwhelmed. Truthful, and honors the role with dignity and specificity. Vocal: Treble / changing voice / young tenor; simple, sincere vocalism; sung lightly.

MRS. NEILSEN – 40s–60s. Female-identifying. A long-term resident of the guesthouse. Practical, drywitted, and quietly perceptive; a survivor with iron endurance. Vocal: Alto / mezzo; warm, lived-in sound; strong blend.

MR. BURKE – 40s–60s. Male-identifying. Town cobbler. Gruff, blunt, opinionated; humor and bite with an undercurrent of compassion. Needs strong timing and grounded presence. Vocal: Baritone; character-driven singing; strong ensemble blend.

MRS. BURKE – 40s–60s. Female-identifying. Mr. Burke’s wife. Tough, no-nonsense, sharp humor; a life of work has made her direct and resilient. Comfortable with bold choices and specificity. Vocal: Alto / mezzo; sturdy, grounded voice; harmony-friendly.

REVEREND MARLOWE – 40s–60s. Male-identifying. A traveling preacher. Charismatic and selfrighteous, with an undercurrent of menace and hypocrisy. Commands a room—moral certainty that curdles into threat. Vocal: Baritone / bass-baritone; intensity and presence; strong narrative delivery.

DR. WALKER – 30s–50s. Any gender. Local doctor. Calm, compassionate, and restrained; often the moral counterweight in the chaos. Understated but essential. Vocal: Any; gentle, reflective singing; excellent blend.

KATHERINE DRAPER (KATE) – Early 20s. Female-identifying. Schoolteacher. Idealistic, warm, hopeful—represents possibility and a future beyond the guesthouse. Emotionally direct and sincere. Vocal: Soprano / mezzo; clear, honest sound; expressive phrasing.

JOE SCOTT – 30s–40s. Male-identifying. A former boxer / local celebrity. Charming, physically confident; a presence that shifts the temperature of the room. Balances charisma with vulnerability and consequence. Vocal: Baritone / tenor; confident, soulful sound; strong storytelling.

PERRY – 20s–30s. Male-identifying. Traveling salesman. Charming, persuasive, and
manipulative—danger beneath polish. Balances allure with volatility and threat. Vocal: Tenor / baritenor; confident tone; can color lyric with edge.

ENSEMBLE – Various ages, all genders. Townspeople and travelers who pass through the
guesthouse; essential to the musical and narrative landscape. Must be strong actors; singers should blend well and commit to storytelling over “performance.” Vocal: All types; strong harmony skills a plus.
