DESCRIPTION

Berlin, 1828. A young woman spirals toward the heights of musical greatness. Following her relentless dream of being the first published female composer in modern Europe, Fanny Mendelssohn must ride the razor's edge of German society torn by social strife, between her parents' rigid expectations and her desperate need for music.

ROLES AND DESCRIPTIONS

FANNY MENDELSSOHN: Female, 20’s-40’s. White, Arab, Persian, or Latine.

A brilliant musician and deeply reflective. She is a hummingbird, with wide emotional swings from elated and flying to dark and brooding. Her parents are pushing her towards the conventional role of a housewife and she resists.

Piano ability a plus, but not required.

FELIX MENDELSSOHN: Male, 20’s-30’s. White, Arab, Persian, or Latine.

A brilliant musician and mercurial jokester. He overflows with talent and charm, but has a harder time with quiet, intimate settings. He is confident, cocky even, and absorbed above all with his art.

Piano ability a plus, but not required.

BECKA MENDELSSOHN: Female, 20’s-30’s. White, Arab, Persian, or Latine.

Spunky and full of fight. She adores her older sister Fanny and tries always to help and serve her as she sees best. There is little space between her impulses and actions. She has a fire that is her charm but also gets her in trouble.

Ability to sing a plus, but not required.

WILHELM HENSEL: Male, 20’s-40’s.

Any ethnicity. Becomes Fanny’s husband during the story. He loves Fanny and is the calm to her storm. He is a painter and fine artist, and completely supports her in her work. He is dependable, thoughtful, considerate and warm.

HEINRICH HEINE: Male, 30’s-50’s. Any ethnicity.

A frequent guest in the Mendelssohn household. A brilliant poet, and a wise observer of mankind. He loves the Mendelssohn family and wishes to protect them from attacks by the outside world.

LAMOND: Male, 30’s-50’s. White, Arab, Persian, or Latine.

The bad guy. He is passionate, animated and always right. He burns for the greatness of the German Homeland and feels that to correct a polluted society is the highest calling for a man.

LANDSTREIKER/GOUNOD: Male, 20’s-40’s. White, Arab, Persian, or Latine.

Landstreiker— Saturnine. He is disciplined and principled, but lacks discrimination. He is led around by the nose by Lamond, and duped. He too longs for the greatness of the Homeland.

Gounod— Fine musician, with a youthful spring in his step and enthusiasm for all Beauty. He admires and adores Fanny. He refuses to let her get down on herself when he is around.

ENSEMBLE WOMAN: Female. 20’s–40’s.

Any ethnicity. Plays various female characters.
