JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Public Theater is seeking friendly, professional, and motivated Front of House staff (primarily Ushers) with exceptional customer service skills for the 2026 Free Shakespeare in the Park season at The Delacorte Theater, The Public’s open-air venue in Central Park. Free Shakespeare in the Park is one of New York City’s most beloved summer traditions, welcoming thousands of patrons each night to experience (free) world-class theater in the heart of Central Park. Front of House staff are responsible for providing the highest level of customer service to patrons, donors, visiting artists, artist management, and all other members of the public and administration they may encounter.
This is a part-time, seasonal position running from mid-May through mid-September 2026.
Compensation: $17.00–$19.00 per hour (depending on certifications).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Front of House staff are responsible for greeting patrons and escorting them to their seats in a professional, welcoming, and efficient manner. Staff should be knowledgeable about The Public Theater, including its policies, programs, and the Free Shakespeare in the Park season at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Front of House staff are also responsible for helping to ensure that all theater rules and regulations are followed. Front of House staff may be asked to perform any duties necessary to support the care and maintenance of the theater and to ensure a safe and positive experience for all patrons. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, pre-show preparations, post-show breakdown, assisting with audience flow in a large outdoor venue, and helping to ensure the safety of patrons and staff, including responding to emergencies when required.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States
• Work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
• Work outdoors with environmental conditions such as excessive heat, high winds, rain, insects, and wildlife
• Comfortable in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment
• Communicate effectively
• Handle various personalities and situations with thoughtfulness, kindness, diplomacy, and tact
• Create and sustain positive working relationships
• Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the diverse ethnic, socio-economic, disability, and gender diversity of patrons and staff
• Ability to stand for long periods
• Ability to climb steps repeatedly
• Ability to ascend/descend ramps and inclines/declines
• Maintain a professional, neat, and well-groomed appearance, adhering to The Public Theater’s standards
