SEEKING
Equity actors for roles in FAT HAM (See breakdown).

Actors of all ethnicities, and gender identities are encouraged to audition. In reference to the character descriptions — most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But how ever limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide (Language developed by Kevin Kantor and Emily Tarquin from the Actors Theatre of Louisville).

PREPARATION
Auditions will consist of cold readings. Advance perusal of the script is requested. Sides will be available at the audition site and at: StageWest.org/auditions . Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

FAT HAM
SYNOPSIS:
Juicy’s got a lot on his plate - his mom just married his uncle. All he wants is to make his own way as a queer Black man in a Southern family. But here’s the rub - his father’s ghost just turned up at a backyard barbecue demanding vengeance. In this delicious and sizzling reinvention of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, a young man vows to break the cycles of violence in service of his own liberation and joy.

SEEKING:
JUICY - he/him. Black. 20s. Beautiful. Lonely. Smart. Thicc. Queer. Haunted. A kind of Hamlet.

TEDRA - she/her. Black. 40s-50s. Juicy’s mother. Warm. Vivacious. Comfortable operating in extremes. A good and loving mother in her own way. A kind of Gertrude.

REV/PAP - he/him. Black. 40s-50s. REV: Tedra’s new husband, her dead ex-husband’s brother. Juicy’s uncle. Pig farmer and pit master. Electric. A kind of Claudius; PAP: the Ghost of Juicy’s father. Was in prison for killing someone until he got shanked. A kind of Hamlet’s father. The same actor plays REV and PAP.

OPAL - she/her. Black. 20s. Juicy’s friend. She loves and worries about him. A kind of Ophelia.

LARRY - he/him. Black. 20s. A marine trying to heal from PTSD. Has a secret. Awkward. Has a depth that fills silence. A kind of Laertes.

RABBY - she/her. Black. 40s-50s. Larry and Opal’s mother. Tedra’s friend. Semi-churchy, but honestly she just wants to drink and praise the Lord. A kind of Polonius.
