Show Summary:
Redemption Song, with music, lyrics, and book written by Rebekah Holland, tells the story of a singer-songwriter who must find her voice again after a three-year bought with writers block, a problem which develops after she experiences a tragic loss. Three years ago, Phoebe was living the dream… well, a dream at least. Having recently graduated from college, Phoebe moves home to Nashville for an internship with the prestigious country music songwriting group, Hill/McBride. Although country music isn’t really her thing, Phoebe graciously accepts the opportunity to train under one of her idols, the program’s co-mentor, Adella Daniels. As mentioned, it seems Phoebe is living a dream.
The problem is that she knows it’s not really hers. Phoebe struggles with her identity as a singer-songwriter but does not want to let her father down. Graham Silver, Phoebe’s father, is a beloved session musician on the Nashville recording scene and the one who helped Phoebe snag the internship. When Graham reveals that he has a terminal illness, Phoebe’s world begins to unravel. As she wrestles with fitting in and finding her place, Phoebe also loses precious time with Graham. When she is kicked out of the program just after her father’s death, the creative block sets in. If she wants to write music again, Phoebe will have to process her guilt and regret, as well as grieve the loss of her father. With the help of a quirky therapist, her lawyer sister, and a jazz piano-playing juvenile defense attorney friend, Phoebe endeavors to do just that. Fusing the country sounds of Nashville with the jazzy tones of Morningside Heights, Redemption Song is a heartfelt story of love, discovery, and learning yourself.
