SYNOPSIS
As Sondheim wrote in his book Finishing the Hat, Company is about "the challenge of maintaining relationships in a society becoming increasingly depersonalized." And a real connection, as the musical points out, is the key to "being alive."
The story follows Robert, a bachelor in New York City, as he contemplates his unmarried state on his 35th birthday. His married friends throw him a surprise party, and over the course of the evening, they explain the pros and cons of marriage. Robert is forced to question his bachelorhood as he interacts with his friends. Through a series of vignettes showcasing life and love, Company is both a tale of relationships as well as a love letter to New York City.
