DESCRIPTION

‘LIMITROPHE’ - A Columbia University School of the Arts Thesis Production, May 2-3, 2026

What can you build on a territory that has been reduced to ruins? On the edge of a border harbour, under a cloche, there aren’t many souls left living. Yet, THE GRAPEVINE narrates, NEREO’s arrival to this terrible territory on Suspension Sunday. By chance, he gets hired as a handy man at the Borrodale country house. There, in the middle of debris, are sur-viving THE BARONESS OF BORRODALE and JACKIE, childhood allies and accomplices. If the young man’s presence sows discord, friction, and jealousy between the two, it also reveals the devastation and the limits, and the possibilities of their future. All characters act, speak, and react, bearing the marks of devastating conflicts and events.

Age is irrelevant, but we suspect that the women are older than the men. If there were to be an age limit to the play, it would be 35. If a part of each of them belongs to this ‘place’, they each come from a different land.

NEREO (man) Sweet, in spite of life’s circumstances put him through. Agile, skilled, reliable. Redoubtable when you least expect it. Suspicious.

THE BARONESS OF BORRODALE (woman) Powerful, reluctant to give up power. None of her ascendency comes from within. Yet she has a surprisingly rich inner life.

JACKIE or J. (Woman) Unpredictable, untamed. She knows how to get into the party spirit. Head in the clouds, yet radically practical.

THE GRAPEVINE (man) Wise beyond his years, a narrator, a nebulous radio voice, witty and determined.

Payment will be a $150 minimum, with the $500 maximum being determined by the success of a fundraising campaign. Any payment amount short of the full fundraising goal will be pro-rated and distributed to artists.

Please send a headshot, resume, and any schedule requirements/conflicts between March 28 and May 3, 2026 by email. Auditions will take place at Columbia University February 28-March 1. We will reach out to schedule! Thank you.
