DESCRIPTION

Actor interns wanted to participate in a working focus group to help adapt The Eugene O'Neill Studio acting classes to the online platform through the O'Neill Studio Free Lab.

The Lab is a no-fee (tuition free) forum in which participants provide feedback in exchange for online acting coaching.

The O'Neill Studio uses the plays of Eugene O'Neill, America's only Nobel Prize-winning playwright (and winner of four Pulitzer prizes), as a workbench for the acting craft.

Over the course of three remote individual sessions and one group, intern actors will receive monologue coaching and then provide feedback on the process to inform the creation of the forthcoming online studio, which has thus far only existed in an in-person format.

The O'Neill Studio is led by Stephen Kennedy Murphy, artistic director of its sponsoring organization, Playwright Theater of New York and founder of its counterpart at Yale. Stephen Kennedy Murphy - Wikipedia. Murphy was a student of Sanford Meisner, whose teachings figure prominently into The O'Neill Studio approach,

BENEFITS:

Working on Eugene O'Neill's plays give the actor an anchor that once dropped, keeps the actor flexible, authentic and relaxed.

Flexible - In The Eugene O'Neill Studio, along with the depth O’Neill plays (and other plays of gravity) demand, flexibility and flow are emphasized to keep the actor pliable and emotionally agile.

Authentic - With AI on the rise, authenticity is at a premium. In our Studio, while working through the remote medium we help the actor deepen the connection between the author’s words and their own authentic artistic intimacy, even through the lens of technology.

Relaxed - We are increasingly on camera, making us increasingly self-conscious, especially when there's something at stake such as with online auditions and self-tapings. In our Studio, we focus on breathing techniques that level off the adrenaline anxiety that comes with camera work under pressure.

The O’Neill Studio has developed these tools so as to be able to drop in emotionally and stay connected.
