We've been loving Only Murders in the Building since day one. But when Season 2 of the Hulu comedy-mystery ended with a murder at a Broadway theatre, we got a little excited about what may be to come for third season. And in a recent interview with Variety, the Tony-winning songwriting team Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman teased that there may be a musical episode on the horizon.
“We’ve worked on the next season of Only Murders in the Building,” Shaiman told Variety. “We’re not allowed to say anything more than that, but you could probably do that math.” If not a whole musical episode, we're at least getting a new tune or two. Could be that the Broadway show from that Season 2 finale was a musical and we'll be seeing scenes from it throughout the season.
The show stars Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez as neighbors who start a true crime podcast to sleuth out a murderer in their own Upper West Side apartment building. Several Broadway stars have shown up in the show's previous two seasons, such as Jackie Hoffman, Nathan Lane, Jayne Houdyshell, Jane Lynch, and Jason Veasey. It seems only right that Only Murders would use some of this showstoppers to their fullest potentials. Short's character is even a theatre director! It just makes sense.
Only Murders in the Building has added Meryl Streep, Jesse Williams, and Paul Rudd to cast list for Season 3, which is set to premiere on Hulu August 8. (Rudd was the dead body on stage in the Season 2 finale, but he's up and walking around in the trailer below.)
