Wrapping up The Today Show's "Best of Broadway" week, the 12-time Tony-nominated musical SpongeBob SquarePants performed on Rockefeller Plaza.
Tony nominee Ethan Slater, who plays SpongeBob, led the cast in “Hero Is My Middle Name” alongside co-stars Lilli Cooper as Sandy Cheeks and Danny Skinner as Patrick Starr. SpongeBob earned a nomination for Best Original Score, written by a collage of pop stars, including Tony winner Cyndi Lauper (Kinky Boots), who penned the number below.
In addition to Slater for Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical, Best Score, and Best Musical, the show also earned nods for director Tina Landau, book writer Kyle Jarrow, featured actor Gavin Lee, set and costume designer David Zinn, lighting designer Kevin Adams, sound designers Walter Trarbach and Mike Dobson, choreogrpher Christopher Gattelli, and orchestrator Tom Kitt.
The show officially opened in December at Broadway’s Palace Theatre.
