Nearly 20 years since the Broadway bow of his first solo show, Freak, John Leguizamo opened his latest one-man piece, Latin History For Morons, at Studio 54. Nominated for two Tony Awards for Freak and a Drama Desk winner for Ghetto Klown in 2011, this latest work is a deeper dive into Leguizamo’s personal identity struggle, his family dynamics, and the erasure of Latin history from American education.

The star greeted Playbill Live from the red carpet of his opening night and, answering a Facebook audience member’s question, recommended how we can unearth the untold stories of minority history—particularly Latin history—and how we can create change in our own schools. Additionally, the actor opened up about personifying his son, his daughter, and his wife, and what it was like to create them as characters. His director, Tony Taccone, also joined Playbill. An expert curator of solo shows—including Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking—he explained what directing a solo show entails and the special qualities one must have to carve that path.
