Video Watch Gypsy Standby Tryphena Wade Sing 'Some People'

Wade is Audra McDonald's standby in the Tony-nominated revival of the classic musical at the Majestic.

Tryphena Wade, currently the standby for the role of Rose in the Tony-nominated revival of Gypsy, was recently part of the At This Performance… concert series, an ongoing salute to Broadway and Off-Broadway standbys, understudies, and alternates.

Wade, previously seen on Broadway in The Lion King, performed the Gypsy classic "Some People" during the evening at the Green Room 42. Watch her powerful performance in the video above.

Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald currently plays Rose in Gypsy, with alternate Montego Glover playing the role on Sundays. Gypsy is set to play its final performance August 17 at Broadway's Majestic Theatre, capping off a 28-preview, 269-performance run that opened December 19, 2024. See what critics thought of the production here.

With her 11th Tony nomination, McDonald made history this year as the most Tony-nominated performer of all time (along with her previous record of being the most Tony-awarded performer in Tony history, with six). She stars opposite Danny Burstein as Herbie, Joy Woods as Louise, Jordan Tyson as June, Kevin Csolak as Tulsa, Lesli Margherita as Tessie Tura, Lili Thomas as Miss Mazeppa, Mylinda Hull as Miss Electra, Jacob Ming-Trent as Uncle Jocko, Kyleigh Denae Vickers as Baby Louise, and Marley Lianne Gomes and Jade Smith as Baby June. Wade is the standby for Rose. Montego Glover stars as Rose at Sunday matinees. Wolfe directs.
