The Off-Broadway revival of the Howard Ashman-Alan Menken musical is celebrating September 21 in style.

It’s the 21st day of the month of September—and that can only mean one thing. Look out for sudden, unexplained total eclipses of the sun, and steer clear of any extra-terrestrial plants. It’s Little Shop of Horrors day, and the company of the current Off-Broadway revival (continuing its run at the Westside Theatre) is celebrating with a special performance of “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space.” Watch above!

The song, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, is not in the musical’s stage production, but was written for its 1987 film version.

The musical currently features Thomas Doherty (Gossip Girl) as Seymour and Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Audrey, along with Drama Desk nominee Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose, Jesus Christ Superstar) as Dr. Orin Scrivello DDS, Tony nominee Reg Rogers (The Dazzle, Merrily We Roll Along) as Mushnik, Major Attaway (Aladdin) as The Voice of Audrey II, Christine Wanda as Ronnette, Savannah Lee Birdsong as Crystal, and Morgan Ashley Bryant as Chiffon. The company also includes Teddy Yudain, Jonothon Lyons, Mecca Hicks, Aveena Sawyer, Jeff Sears, Noel MacNeal, Johnny Newcomb, Jon Riddleberger, David Colston Corris, Bryan Fenkart, Alloria Frayser, Christopher Swan, and Chani Maisonet.

The Off-Broadway revival began previews September 17, 2019, prior to an official opening October 17; the production resumed its run September 21, 2021, after temporarily closing in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

Director Michael Mayer's creative team for the Howard Ashman-Alan Menken musical also includes choreographer Ellenore Scott, scenic designer Julian Crouch, lighting designer Bradley King, costume designer Tom Broecker, sound designer Jessica Paz, puppet designer Nicholas Mahon, original puppet designer Martin P. Robinson, hair and makeup designer Tommy Kurzman, music supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger Will Van Dyke, and casting director Jim Carnahan. Puppets are by Monkey Boys Productions.

General management is by Live Wire Theatrical/Chris Aniello, and production stage management is by Kate Croasdale.

Tickets are now on sale through January 2027. Click here for tickets.
