Nick Blaemire's musical Soon will bow Off-Broadway this fall, playing East Village Basement October 29-November 9. The production will be the new venue's first-ever musical.
Get a sneak peek of a song from the musical—"Waiting," performed by Nicholas Podany, with an appearance by Ava Delaney—in the video above. The video features orchestration and accordion by Wiley DeWeese, guitar by Kevin Wunderlich, mandolin by Nyssa Grant, and production by Van Hughes.
Will Blum (Beetlejuice) will direct the original musical, about a young woman who avoids the oncoming apocalypse watching TV and eating peanut butter on her couch, until she's forced to reckon her own role in her solitude. The work previously played Arlington, Virginia's Signature in 2015.
The Off-Broadway cast will include Delaney as Charlie, Podany as Jonah, Mike Millan as Steven, and Mylinda Hull as Adrienne.
"I love big stories in small containers, and Soon is a prime example of that," said Blaemire in an earlier statement. "A musical about an East Village apartment that takes place in a real East Village apartment is the kind of unique theatregoing experience I crave as an audience member, so to have found the perfect space to pull it off is a miracle. And to tell a story that speaks to the times we're living through in an indirect but hopefully resonant way makes this opportunity all the more exciting."
The Off-Broadway staging will also feature music direction and orchestrations by Wiley DeWeese, scenic and lighting design by Chris Bowser, costume design by Gina Ruiz, prop design by Oona F.I.B., and associate music direction and music copying by Dylan Kaufman. Sarah L. Adams will serve as production stage manager. Tricia Small is producing.
