International News Videos: See the Trailers for New Korean Production of Maybe Happy Ending and Film Adaptation

Following its Best Musical Tony Award win, the musical is returning to Korea with a splash.

Maybe Happy Ending is taking a victory lap, back to Korea. After winning the much-coveted Tony Award for Best Musical in June, the Will Aronson-Hue Park musical will get a new production in Seoul, which is where the musical premiered a decade ago. See the trailer for the new production in the video above.

The production, which will be performed entirely in Korean, will run October 30, 2025–January 25, 2026, at Doosan Art Center’s Yonkang Hall. The musical follows two robots who, after being discarded by their owners, set out on a road trip and fall in love.

Park and Aronson first wrote Maybe Happy Ending simultaneously in both English and Korean. The musical had its world premiere in South Korea in 2016 where it was a massive hit. South Korean musicals tend to play limited runs, but Maybe Happy Ending has been revived there five times since 2016. This upcoming revival will be its sixth.

“To have this story continue for 10 years feels like a small miracle. We’re especially grateful to the audiences who have joined us on this journey. We hope the upcoming performances will continue to knock on hearts and open doors, offering comfort and connection,” Aronson and Park said in a statement to the Korea Times.

The new production will feature actors who starred in the 2016 premiere: Kim Jae-bum as Oliver, Jeon Mi-do and Choi Soo-jin as Claire, and Ko Hoon-jeong as James.

Besides language, the English and Korean versions of Maybe Happy Ending vary greatly. The English version contained new songs while cutting some songs from the Korean version. There are also characters that are present in the English version that are not in the Korean version. The English version is also shorter.

Park previously told Playbill that the team hope to one day mount the Broadway version of Maybe Happy Ending in Korea, saying: "I think everyone who’s involved with the show in Korea is hoping to eventually bring the Broadway version to Korea, too, and maybe have both versions. If not simultaneous, maybe in one season we do the original Korean version, and the next season we do the Broadway version. I think that’s everybody’s hope."

In addition to this new Korean revival, there's a film adaptation of Maybe Happy Ending that will enjoy a wide release in South Korean movie theatres beginning October 2. Titled My Favorite Love Story, the film has been making the film festival circuits since 2023. Lee Won-hoi directs the film, starring Shin Joo-hyup, Kang Hye-in, and Yu Jun-sang.

It should be noted that Park and Aronson were not involved in the film adaptation. Said Park in a previous interview: "We are not involved in it...We said we don't want to get involved in your vision because it's kind of different than our original. They added some backstories to the characters which were not our ideas."

Maybe Happy Ending continues its run on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre. The show will also go on an American tour in 2026.
